Bad eating habits among children often lead to overweight, obesity and the resulting associated diseases. The “We eat healthily, we grow healthily” programme is our response to these worrying research findings.
Through workshops conducted in nurseries and kindergartens throughout Poland, we want to contribute to the promotion of a proper diet, the formation of proper eating habits in the youngest children and to raise awareness of the importance of nutrition in early life among adults.
As part of the program, we prepare dietitians for their new role as nutrition educators. Educators participate in a series of comprehensive training sessions on nutrition for pregnant women and children up to 6 years of age, animating activities with children, conducting nutrition workshops for parents. After the trainings, they participate in internships in nurseries and kindergartens, where they conduct meetings and workshops on proper nutrition of children and consultations for the staff and parents.
By the end of 2017, we had prepared 180 dietitians to educate staff and parents on healthy eating.
1,500 nurseries and kindergartens across Poland participated in the programme.
Over 12,000 staff in nurseries and kindergartens increased their knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition for young children.
From the experiences of a dietician:
There have already been a lot of positive changes in the institutions where I am doing my internship, e.g.:. we have implemented the so-called buffet tables. Thanks to that the children have the choice and can decide for themselves what and how much they want to eat. We have also significantly reduced the amount of salt and sugar in the children’s diet, which helps prevent diet-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Together we have also started to reflect on the issue of food encouragement and whether this is an appropriate practice when working with children.
