Pilot project of opening and running Spynka childcare centers for Ukrainian Children

Pilot project of opening and running Spynka childcare centers for Ukrainian Children

Provision of Early Childhood Development and play services in municipalities serving Ukrainian refugee families in Poland

Project dates

April – October 2022

Goal

Spynka childcare and education programs opening aims to support Ukrainian refugee mothers and children in the process of adaptation to the new conditions and to prepare children for inclusion in the Polish educational system.

Recipients

  • Over 100 educators were trained to work with children in Spynka programs
  • Over 10 000 Ukrainian children were provided day-care play and learning services

Activities

  • Training of Ukrainian educators to work in Spynka childcare and education centers
  • Organizing activities and animation for children next to the temporary refugee’s accommodation places
  • Intiating various forms of childcare and education for Ukrainian Children:
    • SPYNKA Playgroup for the youngest children and their mothers – Regular meetings several times a week for mothers with children (1-4 years old) led by a trained animator assisted by a Ukrainian-speaking person (e.g. one of the mothers)
    • SPYNKA Pre-school Animation Group – Regular meetings of a group of mothers with pre-school children (Ukrainian and Polish) led by a kindergarten teacher assisted by a Ukrainian speaker (e.g. one of the mothers)
    • SPYNKA Day care for young children – Our Foundation has developed and run a model in which the caregiver is accompanied each day by a parent (or, for example, a grandmother) of one child as a volunteer assistant (parent-volunteer participation is stipulated by law). This model is easy to adapt in a community where there are several Ukrainian families with young children. Compared to a nursery school, it provides a much greater sense of security for children and adults (small group, one language, mothers who can support each other) and does not require compliance with restrictive sanitary and fire safety standards.

Sponsor

Pilot of the programme was financed by United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).
